Your seven-day food diary put you a step ahead

Hello friends.

You might remember a blog post I wrote a while back about measuring your food.

In the post, There is value in an online food diary: Trust me, I proposed completing a seven-day food diary using one of the nutrition apps. Did you complete your seven-day food diary? If you did, I hope you gained some useful insights from the exercise.

Sometimes it’s the quiet, low-key, yet nagging lingering nuisances that keep us up at night — those minor aches and pains, tiredness, sadness, anxiety. Some of these symptoms of subclinical malnutrition can be hard to assess clinically, so physicians often dismiss them as something you’re imagining.

Can a food diary help?

Tracking gives you clarity on portions, patterns and even emotional triggers that lead to unhealthy choices. Even after just a few days of tracking, you’ll notice patterns that you may have been previously unaware of — like how those “small” snacks between meals really add up or how often you reach for something out of stress rather than hunger.

Tracking everything you eat is especially valuable when you’re starting a new eating plan or trying to adjust your habits. Why? Because food diaries hold a mirror up to your habits. You can’t change what you’re not aware of, and many of us eat mindlessly without really knowing how much or how often

After tracking what you ate or drank for seven days, you might’ve observed puzzle pieces that if put together over time with continued tracking, point to the possibility that your fatigue — and all those conditions that slow you — could be related to diet. Then you’d be armed with the information and opportunity to change that. You’d then have to ask “What will I do next to address what I’m seeing?”

Did your food diary show that you’re making consistently healthy food choices? Got a little work to do? Got a lot of work to do? Whatever your seven days showed you, it’s more than you knew before you tracked your meals. If you have some work to do… seriously, who doesn’t — then start with baby steps.

If you participated in this exercise, kudos to you! This took some time and effort, for sure. But I hope it gave you something of value in return. Also, if you’ve shared your outcomes, thank you! For those who haven’t done the exercise and plan to, I’d love to know what you all thought about this exercise.
