Less than two years ago, I lived near a Chick-fil-A that, from what I was told, is the busiest one in Georgia — raking in the highest revenue in the state. I wasn’t surprised. The amount of people coming in and out of that location was staggering. I should say is. I’m sure this is still the case.
The sheer volume of cars, the lines and the endless stream of customers was really astonishing. The parking lot was a scene of perpetual motion. Morning, noon and night, cars crawled in and out, creating a constant traffic bottleneck. The drive-thru line was a perpetual snarl, stretching so far it became part of the local landscape.
I used to wonder, What is it about this chicken?
After all, Chick-fil-A’s menu is pretty simple — variations of chicken sandwiches, nuggets, salads, fries, milkshakes, breakfast items and the like. There’s no beef, no pork, just chicken. Yet the frenzy surrounding their food seemed, at first glance, wildly disproportionate.
Asking the wrong question
It wasn’t until much later that it hit me: I was asking the wrong question. It’s not about the chicken. At all.

Those endless lines aren’t just about taste or preference. They’re a testament to something much deeper — and unsettling. Chick-fil-A’s food, like that of many fast-food giants, likely contains a cocktail of ingredients designed to activate cravings and create loyalty that borders on obsession. This was fascinating to observe. The insanity of it.
A chicken sandwich is, at its core, a relatively simple concept. Yes, recipes differ, and some places do it better than others, but how many chicken sandwiches are worth blocking traffic for? How many are worth people ignoring basic courtesy, stalling traffic, making illegal turns or risking fender benders just to get their order? There was something “Twilight Zone-ish” about it.
The reality is, it’s not just about “good food.” It’s about something masterminded to create insatiable desire. Those lines represent more than fried chicken — they reflect the calculated manipulation of taste and desire.
Next time you pass by a food joint swarmed with customers, take a moment to wonder: What’s in that food? What makes people flock to it like moths to a flame? Because if it were just about taste, would it inspire this kind of chaos?
The answers might not be as simple — or as comforting — as we’d like to believe.
Here in Atlanta in an area known as “The Fourth Ward,” there’s a stretch of land that could probably be called “Fast Food Row.” Within a few blocks, you’ll find a Popeye’s, McDonald’s, Zaxby’s, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin Robbins and probably a couple more I can’t recall. In June 2023, a brand-new Chick-fil-A joined the lineup. Its opening ignited controversy, with many predicting it would turn into a traffic nightmare. Another Chick-fil-A just opened on January 9, 2025 — wait for it — just four blocks away from the one that just debuted in June 2023. Four. Blocks. Away.
