Peace is powerful, until food becomes your escape

Boy trapped and held captive symbolically by food all around him

What if the very thing you turn to for solace
is silently holding you captive?

The battle for wellness isn’t fought in the kitchen or the gym only; it’s waged deep within the quiet chambers of your own mind. For many, the plate becomes a canvas for unspoken anxieties, a refuge from the storm of life, but at what hidden cost? You know the feeling: that undeniable pull toward comfort, a craving that has nothing to do with hunger and everything to do with escape.

Excess weight, like many of life’s other challenges, must be addressed from within. Books, videos, podcasts, blogs, support groups and others who inspire you can be helpful, but at the end of the day, your healing is a solitary pursuit. Your solitary pursuit.

Addressing excess weight means examining your life and questioning your actions. There’s a reason for overeating. For many, it’s a means of coping with life’s problems. Food becomes comfort for stressed, busy lives; bad relationships; loneliness; fear; unhappiness and depression.

Here, food is being used for more than sustenance; it’s being used as an intoxicant. This means that beyond changing your diet, you must tackle the reasons for any unhealthy eating habits. You must address your need to use food for emotional comfort. Emotional eaters typically reach for food in response to uncomfortable feelings.

Sometimes, it’s easier to experience the comfort of harming oneself, rather than the discomfort of change. But to make lasting changes, you’ll need to withdraw into self and examine what makes you turn to food for comfort. One way or another, if you’re an emotional eater — whether you do this solo, or with professional help — you’ll need to find ways to reframe your thinking around using food in this way.

There’s no shame in emotional eating. We all have our battles. But it’s wise to recognize it and emerge from it to achieve healthy outcomes. We have the power to reframe our perceptions of life, health and vitality, and to actively shape our well-being. Align with your power.

One starting point could be a food journal. I’ve written on the importance of food trackers: There is value in an online food diary: Trust me and Mirror, mirror on the wall, be the healthiest of them all. Give ’em a read.
