It’s easy to blame technology for what feels like a collective unraveling: short attention spans, fragmented routines, shallow relationships. Screens compete for our time. Apps interrupt the quiet. Devices become middlemen between our thoughts and our bodies.
The real problem isn’t technology itself, but the way we use it.
Holism reminds us that nothing stands alone. Mind, body, emotions and environment are all intertwined. When a tool distracts us from our senses, hijacks our focus or bends our rhythm to someone else’s design, it runs counter to a holistic life. But what if that same tool could help you return to yourself?
Technology doesn’t have to mean disconnection. Used with purpose, it can become a reflection, a cue, even a pathway back to ourselves.

Shift your tech, Shift your day
| Say NO | Say YES |
| Notifications | Set a recurring reminder to pause and breathe. |
| Endless scrolling | Use your phone to track how certain foods affect your energy or digestion. |
| Chasing productivity apps | Use a calendar to block off time for things that restore you. |
The question is not whether we should unplug entirely. Instead, it’s whether we can plug into something that aligns us more deeply with how we want to live.
Holism means seeing the whole. If a tool can help you feel more connected to your body, more present with your choices, more in rhythm with your days, then it belongs.
Let’s not reject technology. Let’s reclaim it.
Tech tools for your diet
Meal Planning Apps
Apps like Mealime, Paprika or PlateJoy help you plan meals based on your dietary needs, schedule and preferences. Many generate shopping lists automatically.
Nutrition Tracking
Tools like Cronometer, MyFitnessPal or MacrosFirst let you track nutrients, not just calories. These are especially helpful if you’re monitoring protein intake, fiber or specific vitamins and minerals.
Wearable Integration
Fitness trackers and smartwatches (like Fitbit or Apple Watch) often integrate with food tracking apps, giving you a fuller picture of your energy balance and habits over time.
Barcode Scanners for Labels
Apps like Yuka or Fooducate let you scan product barcodes and immediately view their nutrition profile, and sometimes highlight additives or ingredients of concern.
Hydration Reminders
Apps such as WaterMinder or Plant Nanny can remind you to drink water throughout the day, which is easy to overlook but critical for digestion and metabolism.
Grocery Delivery with Filters
Services like Instacart, Thrive Market or Whole Foods via Amazon let you filter items by dietary needs (gluten-free, low-sodium, etc.), making it easier to stick to your nutrition goals when shopping online.
Educational Platforms
Podcasts, newsletters and YouTube channels hosted by qualified nutrition professionals can help you stay informed.
Virtual Consultations
Telehealth makes it easier to access registered dietitians and functional nutrition practitioners, whether you want a quick question answered or a full nutritional assessment.
Habit-Building Apps
Apps like Way of Life or Streaks can help you build small, sustainable nutrition habits, like eating more vegetables or reducing added sugars.
Digital tools like meal planning apps, nutrition trackers and wearable devices are transforming how we manage our diets. For instance, studies have shown that smartphone apps can be effective in improving diet and nutrition, addressing obesity and promoting healthier eating habits in the general population.
These are tools, like any others. They can be useful, but they’re not a substitute for common sense. If you know you need to drink 50 ounces of water, you can do that without a tracker. Still, I wouldn’t mention these tools if I didn’t see their value. If they help you stay consistent and support your health, use them when it makes sense.
