This is starting to change a bit, with mainstream medicine beginning to recognize how complementary and alternative (CAM) therapies help patients.

Ayurvedic medicine categorizes individuals into three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) based on their physical and emotional characteristics.

Functional medicine is a relatively new approach to healthcare that addresses the underlying causes of disease by looking at the interactions between genetics, environment and lifestyle factors. It integrates conventional and alternative medicine practices, focusing on personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s unique biochemistry and circumstances. Functional medicine aims to restore balance and optimize health by addressing imbalances in bodily systems.

Integrative medicine combines conventional medical treatments with complementary and alternative therapies, focusing on treating the whole person — mind, body and spirit. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, utilizing a holistic approach to healthcare that integrates evidence-based practices from various traditions to promote wellness and healing. Integrative medicine aims to address physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of health, emphasizing prevention and patient empowerment.

Naturopathic medicine emerged in the late 19th century as a holistic approach to healthcare that emphasizes prevention, natural remedies and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Naturopathic physicians focus on treating the root cause of illness, using therapies such as herbal medicine, nutrition, lifestyle counseling, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and physical medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine, dating back over 2,500 years. It includes practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage (tui na), dietary therapy and exercises like tai chi and qigong. TCM focuses on balancing the body’s vital energy (Qi) to maintain health and prevent disease, viewing the body as an interconnected system of energy pathways.

The richness of our medical landscape lies in its diversity. It offers us a spectrum of choices to suit our unique needs and preferences. Whether you find solace in the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, the precision of allopathic medicine or the integrative ethos of functional medicine, or some combination thereof, the common thread remains the pursuit of optimal health and vitality.
